Channel View Footbridge Aerial CGI

Click here for Channel View Regeneration

Cardiff Council is developing exciting plans for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the River Taff. We have recently appointed a design team led by Arcadis Consulting with Moxon’s Architects to begin designing the bridge and would love to hear your views.

The new bridge will link the Channel View estate, the Marl and the area around Jim Driscoll Way on the west bank of the river to Hamadryad Park on the east bank. The bridge is an important part of wider plans to regenerate the Channel View area. It will provide:

  • An important connection for communities on both sides of the river, linking to schools, parks, leisure facilities and open spaces.
  • An important link within the wider network of routes for walking and cycling, linking to the Cardiff Bay Trail and Ely Trail.
  • A much needed alternative to the busy A 4232 Cardiff Bay Link Road and A4119 Clarence Road for pedestrians and cyclists, including school children.

We are designing the bridge so that it is:

  • Suitable for both pedestrians and cyclists
  • Comfortable for people of all ages and abilities to use
  • Sensitive to the local environment and needs of river users
  • Sustainable in its design
  • Practical, in terms on buildability and ongoing maintenance.
  • Integrated within the riverbanks, parks and path networks on both sides.

Current status

The project will progress in the following key stages (see below).

Stage 1 Early Design work

This stage involves undertaking all the necessary survey work on the site, such as trees, ecology and site condition surveys. These began in early 2022 and will continue until spring 2023.They tell us all we need to know about the site to help shape the design of the proposed bridge. We have also held a number of workshops between council departments to discuss early requirements for the design.

This information has been used to come up with some initial ideas and early designs for the bridge. We will get feedback on these ideas from the community, stakeholders and a range of technical experts to be able to develop a the design further.

Stage 2 – Reviewing Consultation Feedback and Progress Detailed Design

This stage involves building on the design work from stage 1. We will review feedback from the consultation and consult technical experts to further shape the design of the proposed bridge.

Stage 3 – Final Public Consultation before submission of planning application

By this stage we will have a detailed design that is very close to what the bridge will look like and will consult with the public and other stakeholders once again for their feedback. We will review the consultation feedback and make any changes to the design before it is finalised for the planning application

Stage 4 – Planning Application:

We hope to be able to submit a planning application for the proposed development in mid 2023 when the detailed design is finalised.
