The Bute Street Independent Living scheme will offer suitable accommodation for the over 55’s in the Butetown ward of Cardiff. The new development will provide a new home for residents living in Nelson House following the Council’s decision to repurpose the high-rise block for family accommodation.

The site is located on the former Brandon Tool Hire site, situated on Bute Street and within walking distance of the City Centre and Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay.

The proposal will deliver high-quality independent living accommodation that will helps residents maintain their independence for longer, provide the flexibility to meet the needs of more vulnerable users and help to tackle social isolation.

The development will provide:

  • one and two bed self-contained apartments.
  • On-site communal facilities including electric scooter charging and storage, bicycle storage, activity rooms, a residents’ lounge, medical suite, guest suites, laundry room and landscaped communal gardens.
  • ‘No Gas’ – we will be using ground source heat pumps as a clean and alternative energy source to gas and installing PV panels to reduce the demand of electric. The low-carbon development will minimise the environmental impact and reduce ongoing running costs for tenants.
  • A community facility will be provided within the building for a local group to lease and make their own.

Current status

We have entered into contract with Hale Construction for the delivery of the development and work on site will commence this summer, the construction period is 18 months and we hope that the properties will be ready for occupation early 2025.

A local girl’s gymnastics club called Fantastic Gymnastics has been selected as our community group to lease the community facility within the building once constructed.
